LEQ: How does a tree grow and how does that effect the way you work on wood?
Activating Strategies:
Have tree section out in classroom. Have students take a matching pretest as they enter on the parts of the tree. # the 5 parts.

Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts:
Review the parts of a tree and have students add the purpose of each part to their notes.
Outer Bark protects
  • Inner Bark transports nutirents
  • Cambium is the growth layer
  • Sapwood transports water
  • Heartwood supports tree

Cover Deciduous and Coniferous trees. Hard and Soft Wood.
  • Deciduous have leaves, grow slower, are denser, loose leaves in winter.
  • Coniferous have needles, cones, are evergreen and are soft woods that grow quickly.
Summarizing Strategies:
Students complete the labeling of the parts of tree section.
