Unit EQ: How are technological Systems Different?
LEQ: Why are open loop systems inaccurate?
Activating Strategies:
Hand out compasses and ask which way is South. How can you tell?
Acceleration/Previewing/Vocabulary:
Lattitude, Longitude, True North, Magnetic North, Prime Meridian, Equator, Hemisphere, Time zones, Degrees, Minutes, Seconds, Compass, Triangulation. Bearing
Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts:
Handout the Orienteering Challenge Sheet and Map of School
Demonstrate taking a bearing. Have students take a bearing in class.
  • A Bearing is an angle from magnetic north.

Demonstrate triangulation with a string.
  • Triangulation is finding a point where two bearings to two different objects cross. (90 degrees is best)
Take students outside and demonstrate bearings and then triangulation. Use lines on parking lot for demonstration of bearing.
Summarizing Strategies:
Return inside and map out a bearing or a triangulated spot.
