LEQ: Why has measurement changed over time and how are measuring tools different?
Activating Strategies: Anticipation Guide with units of measure.
Acceleration/Previewing/Vocabulary: Cubit, Foot, Inch, Fathom, Yard, Rod, Furlong, Meter, Decimal, Nano Technology
Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts:
  1. Check homework (ruler worheet) for completion (5pts)
    • Give "After School Help Form" to anyone with incomplete assignment and have them complete the form.
    • Attach the form to the incomplete assignment and staple it to the homework assignment, kept the assignment.
    • Remind the student to call their parents to let them know they have to stay after school today.
  2. Hand out the anticipation guide and have students complete the before section of the T/F questions. If they are familiar with any units of measure associated with vocabulary they should record the units.
  3. Display and read aloud the Unit EQ.
  4. Display and read aloud the Lesson EQ.
  5. Distribute guided notes on "History of Measurement" and explain the purpose of guided notes.
    • Copy of PPT slides with all the information so students can be part of the discussion rather than frantically copy words from slides.
    • Notes are collected and reviewed, if all questions are answered a student earns full credit (5 pts-marked with a check).
    • Any questions that are not answered is Incomplete (I and earns temporary grade of 0/5). Student has 1 day to complete the notes (corrections) and earn full credit.
  6. Show powerpoint presentation on the classroom plasma.
    • Ask simple questions to encourage students to participate in the discussion
    • During the lesson compare teachers measurements to students
      • Cubit, Foot, Thumnail width (inch), Fathom
    • Students may need reminder(s) to answer the questions in the guided notes.
  7. Goal for day #1 is to complete the "Fathom" slide.
Summarizing Strategies:

Ask simple recall questions:
  • What are common measuring tools (body parts), Why did people use body parts (convenience). What are the problems with this method of measuring (No standard). Ask a student to redefine standard.

standards like kings yard or barley corns, world standards like meter and english system, progressively smaller and more accurate units, nano technology.
Assignments Due:
"Reading a Ruler" practice sheet.
Handouts:
Antipation guide
Measurement guided notes
Homework:
