Activating Strategies: Show video of Simple machines from MSTECH Also possible to use Bill Nye from VOD system.
Acceleration/Previewing/Vocabulary: Force, Effort, Work, Resistance, Load, Machine, Simple Machine, Compound Machine Wheel and Axle
Lever, Screw, Inclined Plane, Wedge, Pulley, Ratio
Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts: After the simple machines video review the types of simple machines using the Smart Board Simple Machines Lesson.
  1. Lever : Beam or Rod that pivots at a Fulcrum and moves a Load when Force is applied.
  2. Wheel and Axle: A continuous lever attached to a shaft.
  3. Pulley: Variation of wheel and axle attached with a belt.
  4. Gears: Variation of wheel and axle that uses teeth and can not slip.
  5. Inclined Plane: A ramp like device that spreads work out over distance.
  6. Wedge: Two inclined planes together.
Compound Machine is two or more simple machines joined together.
Summarizing Strategies:
Have students use the simple machine matching questions on the SmartBoard. have student play game online.
Homework:
List a product for each simple machine that is just made from the simple machine or the simple machine is part of a compound machine.
