LFS Lesson Plan
Unit EQ: What are the basic tools and necessities used for understanding technology?
LEQ: What are the basic tools used for clamping, and how are they used.
**Activating Strategies:
  • Handout tool crib sheet
  • Why do we need clamping tools
    • What are something’s you have done that needed a clamp?

Acceleration/Previewing/Vocabulary:
Bench Vice, Quick Clamp, C-Clamp, Spring Clamp, Hand Screw

Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts:
  • Bench Vice
    • Used to provide stability and pressure.
    • Can hold work for drilling and cutting
    • It is heavy and is made from cast iron.
    • Some are made to be move around and others are attached to a workbench.
  • Quick Clamp
    • The come in all different sizes.
    • They are quick and easy to use.
    • Can be used with just one hand
    • Why would this be important?
    • They have rubber pads to protect the work
    • They have high clamping strength but will not hold work down completely for some operations such as using a chisel.
  • C-Clamp
    • It is called a “C” clamp because of the shape.
    • They come in all different sizes for different jobs.
    • Turn the screw to tighten the work, it has good holding strength.
    • Heavy and hard to use sometimes.
  • Spring Clamp
    • Best used for light clamping
    • The best thing is that they are quick and easy. They can be used with one hand.
  • Hand Screw
    • They come in all different sized.
    • They are meant to be kept in parallel but they can clamp small angles.
    • Show how to use them to keep them parallel.
    • The jaws are made from hard maple and are realy stong.
    • They have been used for a long time
    • Large amount of calmping pressure.

Summarizing Strategies:
  • Ask if anyone has a question
  • Review the names of the tools and how they are best used.
