LFS Lesson Plan
Tool Crib Measurement
Unit EQ: What skills are basic necessities for understanding technology?
LEQ: How do you choose the correct measuring tool?
Activating Strategies: Ask students to list (verbally) measuring tools they are familiar with. Teacher lists them on the board.
Acceleration/Previewing/Vocabulary:
Volume, Distance, Pressure, Area, Volume, Electrical Properities, Speed.
  1. Ask students what each tool is used for. (What do you measure?)
  2. Ast students if they know what units are used for each tool
Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts:
  1. Handout the Measurement "Tool Crib" with pictorial defintions worksheet.
  2. Review what each tool is.
  3. Demonstrate how each tool is used and inform students the units used in the measurement
    • Bench rule - inches "
    • Tape measure - feet ' & inches"
    • Sonic tape - feet ' & inches"
    • Outside calipers - metric or english
    • Inside calipers - metric or english
    • Spark Plug Guage - metric mm, decimal inch
    • Pressure Guage - pounds per square inch - psi
    • Torpedo Level - horizontal - level, plumb - vertical
    • Multimeter - continuity/resitance - ohms, pressure - volts
  4. Ask for a volunteer to try some of the tools in class, discuss inaccuracies they have during their attempt.
Summarizing Strategies:
Create a real life scenario and ask students to choose the measuring tool they would use for the situation.
  • Your shop vac hose is broken and needs to be replaced. = (In or Out Calipers)
  • You are going to repaint your bedroom. You need an estimate of the size of your room. =(Sonic Tape)
  • You are setting up your new air hockey table for the 1st time and you want to ensure that the puck moves based on the flow of air not gravity. You don't want the table leaning. = (Torpedo Level)
